In an America dominated by human purists, those who are marked are doomed to a short life. Despite their reservations, Ran must learn to use the "curse" of their mark to gain strength, and discover who they really are through the pain. Esoteric Heart is a mirror into the mind of the main character, a person just reaching adulthood and learning who they are as a person. Ran, who is definitely super depressed, sees themselves as a blank shadow in the mirror, a paradoxical understanding that they could mold themselves into anything they wanted, yet trapped to be nothing. Ran must learn that their issues can't be solved by themselves and through this understanding, open themselves to those that gather around them.
