Chapter 20 - Maintenance and new Races

Chapter 20 - Maintenance and new Races

Kai smiled as looking at a window that appeared before him after he had found a place he could do his experiments.

[Quest] “Finding the cure for my little brother” has been updated. [Completed]

The quest has been completed and the kid, who would have died has now recovered.

The boy can now lead normal life because his body has recovered to a healthy point.

Reward: Farming Tools and Seeds

The results of your actions lead the boy to recover more than he would have recovered.

Reward: + 1 level

By giving a protector to both the boy and his sister, the Quest was completed with alarming result.

Earthen Wolf Kobold (Titan)

Silver Wolf (Whisper)

Reward: 500 DP + Compassion (Skill)

Compassion (Passive)

The young, sick and old will feel no fear of your appearance and will ask for your help.

You will be seen as a saint and they will treat you with respect.

[Increase the rewards received from NPCs quests.]

Kai smiled at the rewards but soon he frowned as he read the description of the skill he just received.

“This skill… it will be annoying.” He murmured as he dismissed the window. “Let’s start my experiment.” Kai said as he placed his hands before his body and closed his eyes.

‘Magic is born when you visualize things and the name of the spell will appear so you have to say it.’ He remembered what the female adventurer said as he thought about a water ball.

‘Why they need to shout the spell name? Isn’t that going to allow the enemy to foresee what they are going to do?’ Kai thought as he opened his eyes as he felt a small bubble appear in his hands.

It stood there for a few seconds before it suddenly popped and turned back to small droplets that sunk on the earth.

“It was a success but a failure as well.” Kai said as he looked at his hands. “Naming the spell might help them focus… but it would not let anyone do any voiceless magic.” He said as he looked at the wolves he had brought with him. Only one had evolved, and it was a Silver Wolf, which he had selected to evolve further but all the others had yet to start to appear.

Kai closed his eyes once more and thought about the water ball once more, but this time he saw it flying forward and hitting the thing that was before him.

He opened his eyes as he felt the mana gather on his hands and from there a water bubble formed before it slowly started to move forward before it exploded splashing water all over the place.

“Hmm, it takes time to visualize the magic and the power of this one is rather weak…” Kai said as he placed his hand on his chin. “I can think why people would shout the magic name, it helps them visualize the actual magic through repetition…” He said as he sat down as he watched the Silver Wolf lay on the ground.

“Maybe the way the wolves use magic is different?” Kai asked himself as he walked towards the Silver Wolf. “Use your magic, I want to see how you do it.” He ordered and the wolf stood up before it gave a small howl and the area around itself turned a bit colder than before.

The ground did freeze, but it was only a thin layer and it couldn’t hold heavy things, but it made the ground slippery.

Kai was about to say the wolf to stop his magic, but he didn’t say it because before the wolf, ice crystals start to appear and from it small icicles appeared before they were thrown and quickly sank at the ground.

“You shall stop now.” Kai said to the ragged breathing wolf.

‘It looks like that all magic are ‘activated’ by voice…’ He thought after seeing how the Silver Wolf used his magic.

Kai stood beside the wolf as he created his own magics by imagining how they would work and how they could be used without the shouting or saying the spell’s name.

Isis stood over the world map as she frowned.

“The player’s dungeon is stronger than the normal formed ones… the natural ones don’t have a boss or a mind on their own, they just spawn more creatures and try to gather as much as they want building deadly traps to kill all the people that enters.” She said as she watched the different colors on her map.

Blue meant to be the color of the NPCs that lived in her world, Green showed the players, Yellow the natural formed dungeons, Red was the most prominent color, it existed all over the world and it showed the monsters.

“Hmm… natural dungeons with a NPC’s mind would be good… they could form bosses now and start to create nice dungeons, or go evil…” Isis said as she watched the map seeing how the players acted. “I can even make that they can form a party with players and others dungeons, it would make the world more rich and interesting to watch.” She continued as she started to create the ‘cast’ of how the natural dungeon would create their mentality.

“Hive mind with evil, neutral or good nature…” Isis said as she molded the form. A husk of a person, not real but at the same time ‘real’. She was making it be like a ghost but not truly a ghost. “Maybe like the players… it can achieve a body by using one of its monsters as a base, but for them, death means dying for real.” She said as she played with the mold on her hands.

Slowly it was gaining form. A body, like a human’s but it could change shape, be it an adult, young, old, male or female, an elf, dwarf, human, beast person… anything could appear, she was just making the mold, the rest, it would create itself as it saw fit.

“This…” Isis suddenly stopped as she watched the form in her hands. “I shall make one appear close to those two and see how they react when it appears.” She smiled as she remembered how it was fun to toy with Kai.

Soon the body was done, it was a small doll, with no features. Clean, without movement, but ‘breathing’.

“Now I think the world will be more ‘stable’, with these the natural dungeons will start forming minds and bodies, maybe even start their own civilization.” Isis said as she let go of the doll.

It fell over the map and it broke down before it was ‘eaten’ by the said map.

“This way to mold the world… I should have created it in a different way.” Isis said as she sighed. The fragments of the broken doll were already digested by the map, it meant that once she forced the players out of the game she could go and make a maintenance to allow the natural dungeons to birth their own minds and personalities. “But… I think I’ll make a small change on this.” She said as a smile floated on her lips.

If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

Paul took his helmet off while being annoyed. He had been forcefully disconnected from the game after he received a notice from the maintenance.

“Luckily the AI said that my character would be sent back to the dungeon with the minions, if it was out, but shouldn’t she let me control how it would act while it was there?” He murmured as he walked outside, all the way to the toilet.

Paul had nothing to do so he lied on his bed, after he returned to his bedroom. He wanted to continue playing the game but the notice said that it would take one IRL, in real life, hour, which meant that three hours would have passed in game.

“I couldn’t even finish my experiments… even though I could picture how I wanted to use magic it would still take a long way just for them to be useful on battle.” He murmured as he let his body rest on his bed. “I hope this maintenance will not change the game so much.” He said as he waited the time to pass.

As the earth shook, a boy appeared before a small cave and in front of him, he saw the goddess and he looked at his own hands while feeling the world under his feet.

“I see you awakened.” The goddess said with a gentle smile. “I’m the Goddess of Life, Isis, and I have changed all the natural dungeons of this world to be like the ones that started to appear around.” She said as she sat a few centimeters of the ground.

“…” The boy opened his mouth but no sound came from it.

“That… hmm… it looks like there was a problem with my creation.” She said before she touched the ground and a strange pulse was released. “Now it might work.” She smiled and the boy continued to look at the goddess.

“Why am I alive?” The boy said as he looked at his half transparent form. His hands could touch things, but he was see-through.

“You, and many others are the first dungeon to appear to gain a consciousness.” The goddess said as she pat his head. “You all were born in this world to make this world flourish, before you were… only a place for monsters to be born.” She said and the boy nodded his head.

“I… think I can remember.” He said shyly.

“All dungeons can remember the moment they started to be, but this time, instead of being only driven by your surviving instinct, you are able to grow as you see fit. You don’t need to follow it anymore.” The goddess smiled and the boy looked away from the woman. “Many older dungeons have already started to turn and do what they want to, but you, you’re a newly formed dungeon, you was born two days ago.” Isis continued patting the boy’s head as she looked at him.

“Can… can I truly live as I want?” He finally asked as he looked up.

“You can.” The goddess said with a smile. “You’re now your own, you can change your dungeon as you see fit now, even your own ‘race’ can change now.” She said and many balls of light appeared around her. “You can choose from any of them, they’re yours.” She said and stopped petting the boy as she flew to the side.

“But… I don’t know what to do.” The boy said as he stared at the balls of light. “I can’t even remember what I ‘lived’ before.” He said but his eyes were glued at the flying balls.

“There is no need to be afraid, these are what will give you a true body, for now, you’re being created by the mana the world has.” Isis said with a gentle voice. “Any of these, will change you and give you a true body, a body that can interact with the world… though it will mean that you can die…” She said and the boy slowly nodded.

Death was a normal thing for dungeons, even the ones that followed their instincts, death meant that they would never come back, it was the end for them.

“Then… if I stay like this?” The boy asked, this time he looked at the purple haired girl and saw that she had changed her clothes to a weird one.

“You still can die, but on your form, you will start fading and will probably go look for a host inside your own dungeon.” Isis answered seriously. “You’re a dungeon’s mind, now that you’re alive, you can move and walk. But your suffering will come as well, this time if your body is killed, and your core taken away, you are going to die, for sure.” She said seriously.

“I…” The boy said and looked at the spheres that continued to fly around.

He didn’t know for how long he stared at the balls of light but soon he moved to one of them and touched it, holding against his chest.

“So you did your choice.” Isis said with a smile. “Live long, my dear Neru.” She disappeared and the boy fell on the ground as if he was sleeping.

Kai opened his eyes just to find himself at the entrance of his dungeon. He was standing up as if he was guarding it and he couldn’t help but smile because the women, weren’t inside his cave at the moment.

He waited and soon small noises came from the outside and when he walked up he used his front legs to press down two foxes that were trying to run away from him.

You successfully subjugated a couple of a new Canine race.

Want to add it to your ranks and allow them to be summoned through the Summon Minion skill?

[The skill will ask which minion you will want to summon from now on.]

“Yes.” Kai said and the four foxes, two males and females shined before the ones that were under his paws stopped trying to run away.

He didn’t gave them any order and quickly opened the menu to buy a new race but frowned at the cost. 200 DP and it would still be a Tier 0 Race, meaning that it would only strengthen them a bit.

Kai saw the two couples and quickly separated them and he bought the new race, which was Twin Tailed Fox. He selected a couple and he watched the change.

Their brown fur didn’t change but instead a second tail appeared right besides the first one and he could feel that they were more of a magical race than his own wolves.

“So these animals are speed and magic focused.” Kai said as he stared at their nimby body while he felt their natural mana. “Go breed, your number is too small to be of any use for me.” He said using 20 DP to make the group enter in heat and they soon vanished inside his dungeon.

‘No way…’ He thought as he saw the number of Dungeon Points he had, and the number minions his dungeon could hold now was even bigger than what he had thought it would be. ‘I should soon make a new floor.’ He thought but soon looked to the entrance as he heard footsteps.

“Master Kai, we’re back.” The young woman, Nora, said as she arrived at the entrance.

“And I’m sorry… I walked outside to talk with the villagers about a few things and to let them know what you actually did to the boy.” The female adventurer said as she bowed, and at her side Kai was surprised to see a Silver Wolf together with a Crimson one.

“I see. It is good then.” He said not minding it that much because she came back. “You came back, it shows that you can have some freedom.” He added and the woman’s face lighted up. “But, you are going to be watched by the two wolves that are behind you.” He said and the woman nodded.

“Master… the kids were left with their parents, who were overjoyed and gave us a few offerings, even after we rejected them…” Nora said as she placed a big bag on the ground. “And I want to punch my father… he did nothing but eat cookies all day since the day I left!” She said angrily.

“That old man… so he was talking the truth at that time…” Kai said in a low voice before he shook his head and look at the women. “Show me what they gave you to bring as offerings.” He said as he sat on the ground.

“Yes, Master!” Nora quickly said changing her tone.

She quickly opened the bag and Kai saw the contents being most food, vegetables and fruits, while some placed tools and bags of what looked to be coins.

“They gave us a lot of useful things.” Kai said surprised, even with the amount he had gotten the last time, with his ever growing number of minions, tools would be a good start for the Kobold to learn how to make them and to use them. “Go gather all the Kobolds. Have them share and teach them how to use the tools they will receive.” He said for the two women and they quickly stood up.

“Master…” Nora waited a bit more and when Kai turned to face her, the woman quickly placed a small kiss at the top of his muzzle before she darted off.

Kai just stood there looking at nothing.

“So even you can be dazzled…” A voice came from the side.

“Isis.” Kai woke up and sighed just to see the doll have a smile on her face.

“Check your email later, I think you will like to see what you just received there.” She said as she took some distance from him.

“WHAT DID YOU JUST DO?” Kai asked as he tried to catch the running doll. “I’LL BREAK YOU ONCE I GET YOU.” He shouted as the doll danced all over the place making him run around for quite some time.
