Synopsis
This is a re-visiting of my earlier attempt to tackle the same story which didn't really pan out.
Tom Elgar is a British Army sniper, taking on Taliban vehicle-borne IEDs with his Cyclone anti-materiel rifle in Afghanistan when a car bomb should have ended both his tour and his life. But instead of a painful and messy end, Tom tumbles through a summoning portal into another land devastated by invasion. Hordes of monsters have pushed the human kingdom of Aquitan to the brink and its survivors cower beneath the tyranny of a new ruler: Zygmor the Great Dragon. Hundreds of the kingdom’s finest warriors have already fallen trying to defeat her, for her scales are impenetrable to any weapon and immune to magic. Tom’s Cyclone might be the one thing that can end the dragon’s rule.
But Tom is immediately caught in an on-going power struggle between competing interests in the human and monster populations, he only has a few rounds left, and no one in this mediaeval madhouse knows how to make gunpowder!
Killing the dragon is likely to be the easy bit.
