The war between Arcion the god of light and Viilse the goddess of darkness was supposedly fought and won by the forces of light. Wyn'neth heir to the Duchy of Tenebria doesn't believe it. She's an atheist, the gods aren't real and it's all a story told to keep the dark elves, orcs and goblins down. A fabrication to allow the kingdom of Arcion to continue to enslave the orc and goblin tribes and keep her family from having any power to stop it. The day of the ceremony when she, as heir to the duchy, is supposed to swear allegiance to the Light and continue the family legacy of ensuring the tribes of orcs and goblins do not invade the kingdom is the day everything goes wrong. She's taken to jail, and her family are all killed. She's the last of her line and she's sure she will die until the Darkness calls to her.
