Synopsis
It has been said that we know more about the universe, space, the surface of the moon, and even how the brain works than we do our own oceans. Whatever the comparison, the main sentiment is still valid, we know very little about the dark depths that make up over 70% of the world's surface. We have traversed our continents and learned many of its secrets. Looked into our history, both from a genetic standpoint and a societal one. Made advancements in technology by leaps and bounds, hoping to one day conquer the stars. And yet, even after all of these great accomplishments, 95% of the world's ocean remains alluded in mystery.
Most people go about their day and life not thinking twice about the unimaginable depths and the secrets they hold. For the rest, they are transfixed, in awe, or simply fascinated by the ocean, and a select few find it more than interesting. These people work day in and day out to protect the ocean and its precious ecosystems. Learning as much as they can about the diverse world below the surface. From extensive research on marine life to simply trying to chart the ever-changing and moving environment. In the last 50 years, there has been an ever-increasing amount of concern and awareness about the ocean, lakes, rivers, and any body of water. These climates and environments are being pushed to their breaking point and some have already succumbed. Year after year there is more and more fear that the damage we are doing may be irreversible.
For as much damage humanity has incurred on our beautiful oceans and the planet as a whole, there will always be those giving their life to try and patch it up. It may end up being the difference between our children experiencing the flourishing life on this planet, or them being born into one hurdling toward a premature end. If we ever wish to reach for the stars, and potentially conquer them, we must first secure the big rock that blessed us with the experience of life. Without the ocean and its thriving ecosystems, we could be looking at a grim future.
Riley, a Marine Biologist, was one of these individuals. Someone willing to dedicate their life to the future of the ocean and possibly the planet. Little did she know her whole world would be flipped upside down and thrust into chaos. Humanity would finally find out there were truly drastic consequences to their destructive actions.
