Years ago, Rue's life changed. The problem is that he can't remember what happened. After he turned 18, he was able to retrieve a sealed report that detailed the events of the night, but he can't bring himself to read it. After that night, he spent time being shuffled from home-to-home, until the Vittorans adopted him. Since then, he has led an idyllic life. Compounding upon the pressure to read the report is Rue's upcoming move to university. As he is readying himself to adjust to this new phase of his life, he is hearing more and more accounts of a mysterious disease afflicting seemingly random people.
