It's the late 1940s and a minor film producer named Danny Gold is struggling to get his next project off the ground. He wants to learn the secrets to making a critical hit, a movie so well-received by the movie critics that it will put his name alongside Orson Welles, Darryl F. Zannuck, and Samuel Goldwyn.
