Emsswell Island is a quaint little town, hardly notable as a smudge amongst the many in the San Juan Islands in Washington State.  There's nothing of note really (if you've seen the official brochure): rolling hills of pine trees, rocky beaches, seasonal orca migration, the usual touristy schtick.  oh, and Magic (Not stated on the brochure).   It's an open secret in Emsswell, that magic is real. However, there is no formal education through its use and one has to play by ear. It was just something thing you pick up if you're into it. Turn a coin into two, talk to animals and heck, maybe even see a glimpse of the future.  Gwen Mathis is one such prospect. Born and raised in Emswell, she recently got into the hobby of practicing small-time magic: making charms and casting happy-go-lucky spells to high school students to make a buck as she set up shop behind the local convenience mart.  Gwen dreams of a life outside of the small town and into the bigger world. But that dream needs serious cash. And the outside world isn't a safe place for a lonesome burgeoning practitioner of the arcane arts.  So she turns to Emsswell and its people and history.  All her life, she thought it was just a quaint little town with a teeny-tiny dash of magic as its saving grace from the mundanity. As she delved deeper into her practice, however, she discovered that there are secrets and knowledge that are best left undisturbed.  Powers left untouched. History remained buried.
