Ben is an average guy. Yes, he did get kidnapped by a city, but so have many other people. Yes, he did get fired from his easy and boring job, but he is far from the first and definitely won't be the last. Yes, his new job is one with an extremely high mortality rate, but that's okay!  It's actually not okay. Ben is going to die, and he can't even escape from his job. Ben is not optimistic about his future, which he is expecting to be extremely short. Ben is naturally an unlikeable person, so he's kinda expecting his new bosses might be the ones to kill him, if the monsters don't get to him first. Ben is scared.
