Entrance Exam

Aaron, the overseer of the examinations, stood tall and imposing before the crowd of elite students. His voice boomed across the room, the sound resonating off the stone walls. “Welcome,” he announced, “my name is Aaron, and I will be overseeing this year's examinations.” His eyes scanned the crowd slowly, taking in the eager faces before him. “All of you managed to score in the top 5% on the national test, and that is why you are standing before me today.”

The air in the room was tense, each student anxiously awaiting their turn. Aaron's next words only added to the pressure. “Today’s examinations will consist of a magical aptitude test as well as an elemental affinity test. For the magical aptitude, the levels go from 1 to 9, and for each level, there is low, mid, and high affinity. 1st level high affinity is the best and 9th level low affinity the worst.”

The students shifted on their feet, their breaths coming in short, nervous bursts. Aaron continued, “Names will be called in order of test scores, lowest scores will begin. I wish you all good luck, and testing will proceed in 5 minutes.” With those final words, Aaron smiled and disappeared in a quiet puff of colorful smoke.

The room fell silent, the only sound the rustling of papers as the first name was called. “Celia Slovensky,” the voice announced. Daemon paid no attention to the unfamiliar name, his mind focused on the task at hand. Confident in his own abilities, he sought out a quiet corner to wait out his turn.

As time passed, Daemon's mind began to wander. Boredom set in, and he found himself drawing inward, seeking out his own magical core. He closed his eyes, focusing on the sensations of magic swirling within him. The colors were vibrant, pulsating with energy, and he lost himself in the beauty of it all.

Hours seemed to pass before he came back to himself. The room had thinned out considerably, and he knew his turn was coming soon. He strained his ears, listening for the next few names to be called. “Kiara Darkheart,” the voice announced. “Liam Darkheart.” Daemon recognized the last name and smirked to himself. His own name would be called soon.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, he heard it. “Daemon Archeron.” His heart skipped a beat, and he strode confidently up to the podium.

“As I have told the others who came before you,” the examiner instructed, “please place your hands upon the podium to commence the magical aptitude test.”

Daemon did as he was instructed, feeling the smooth surface of the podium beneath his fingers. Suddenly, the room erupted in a blinding white light, and Daemon felt a rush of energy flow through him. The light faded, and he looked up to see the examiner staring at him in shock.

“Daemon Archeron,” the examiner announced, his voice trembling slightly. “Magical aptitude 1st Level High Affinity.”

Daemon allowed himself a small smile of satisfaction. He knew he was good, but to see the look of jealousy and greed in the examiner's eyes was a truly sweet victory.
