Chapter 189: Froufrou's Time Travels

It took Froufrou a moment to reorient herself to her present time [checkpoint], as she'd just traveled through a nested [checkpoint] triggered by Kahli in her first scenario. And now, Froufrou had two more scenarios yet to select. She was presently feeling very on the fence about how to proceed, and was really wishing at this moment that she could use spoken language to communicate as such to the Supreme Time Protector's younger self.

"Wow, that was some real shit," said the younger Supreme Time Protector as they sneezed into the arm of their off-white robes. "Um, yea. Wasn't expecting that one. Almost makes me wonder if your other scenarios will also have nested [checkpoints] in them. I guess that would be possible, technically, although I feel like it'd get unstable pretty quickly. Hopefully, for your sake and mine, that was the only nested [checkpoint] you'll encounter right now. All that said, have any thoughts, Froufrou?"

Froufrou squelched up a storm, although she knew that it was for naught. This was nothing like talking to Kahli - in fact, it seemed like the Supreme Time Protector was just ignoring the tone of whatever she squelched and treating it as if she were just babbling at them. Overall, the whole experience was quite frustrating indeed. All that said, after Froufrou had just about squelched herself out, she glanced at the Supreme Time Protector, anxiously awaiting a reply.

"Oh... yes, um, my thoughts exactly," they replied halfheartedly. "Well, uh, want to go ahead and look at that second scenario?"

Froufrou felt beyond frustrated. She was, at Kahli's distinction, the Harbinger of Doom! She deserved more respect than this. Regardless, it was indeed time to check out the second scenario. And Froufrou hated to admit it to herself, but she did agree with the young Supreme Time Protector that it would be more ideal if she did not end up in yet another nested [checkpoint]. Still... the idea of that, too, was somewhat exciting to her.

Froufrou glanced down at her tendrils to behold the glowing scenario underneath. It was time.

[Now viewing scenario 2]

Froufrou was in free-fall through the air. It was jarring - she'd all but completely forgotten that the initial [checkpoint] had started with her tumbling through the sky. With that, Froufrou had to decide how to act, and fast. She did have another scenario left after this...

Froufrou looked up to see Kahli zooming down towards her. She knew that if Kahli arrived, there was a risk of yet another [checkpoint] starting on up. With that Froufrou decided to pull a bit of a friendly fire situation and send a big, green glob of [Putrefy] her way. This was not done out of malice - Froufrou simply wanted to know what might happen if she dealt with Omar on her own, and without getting lapsed into yet another [checkpoint].

"Froufrou! How could you?" cried Kahli as the [Putrefy] attack halted her descent by encasing her in a big, green orb of icky goo.

Froufrou squelched a solemn apology as Omar zoomed up and snatched the purse that contained her.

"Hah! What the fuck were you thinking you fucking idiot?!" spat Omar as the flames on his left arm engorged with sinister power. "I'm gonna burn the shit out of you, just like I burned the prophetic scroll you spawned from!"

Froufrou wasn't necessarily convinced that she had spawned from a prophetic scroll at all, but that didn't mean that she was about to let Omar kill her in cold blood. It was time to see how strong her [Tendrils of Fury] really were.

"Fucking die, you gross fucking bundle of shiiiiiit!"

Froufrou squelched an angry retort as she spun her mighty tendrils in a pinwheel fashion, quickly and surely walloping Omar again and again in the face.

[Combo]

[x4]

Froufrou kept on whirling.

[x2]

She squelched with pride as Omar reeled in pain.

"AGH!"

[Critical hit]

Omar flipped backwards in the air, again and again, his flame-flatulence firing in a wild spray all the while and rightly propelling him even further and indeed jerkily backwards.

Froufrou would've been swelling with a decidedly putrid pride if she hadn't been falling through the air at this moment. See, in all of Omar's twirling and whirling, Froufrou had lost her tendrils' tight grip on the inside of her handbag. As a result, she'd shot right out of there and was presently plummeting through the air. She then saw Kahli had finally gotten through the globule of green goo cast out by her [Putrefy] [skill] and was heading towards Omar. Clearly, Kahli was under the mistaken impression that Omar still had Froufrou in her clutches.

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

But she wasn't! And what could Froufrou do? If only Kahli had picked [Levitate] as her new [skill] instead of [Tendrils of Fury], maybe she wouldn't be in this mess!

Wait a second.

Why hadn't Kahli picked [Levitate] as Froufrou's [skill]? Froufrou racked the microscoping mental processing units equally distributed across every inch of her being. There had been a calculated reason. Froufrou felt almost foolish struggling with this, when indeed her [INT] was so high. Then again, she was under a considerable amount of stress.

Then, it hit her. Well, a buffet of wind hit her, but it hit Froufrou in just the right way to jog her memory. Kahli hadn't picked the [Levitate] [skill] for her because she had access to Kahli's [skills]. And Kahli used [Rock Summon] to levitate, now didn't she? In fact, it was what she was using presently to zoom up and fight Omar for what she thought was the handbag that contained Froufrou.

With that, Froufrou focused her energy and used [Rock Summon] herself. And indeed, a small rock appeared under Froufrou's largest tendril. It wasn't necessarily on Froufrou's left or right side, as all of her tendrils generally kind of congealed together in a messy mass, but all that said what it was was just slightly larger than those tendrils around it.

The rock she'd summoned was considerably smaller than the rock Kahli could summon, as was to be expected. However, Froufrou was able to pool together some of her energy with enough mental focus that she could actually grow the rock substantially larger - indeed, she almost got it to match the size of Kahli's normal, non-oversized [Rock Summon] rock. Froufrou wondered how this was possible, as it was comically oversized compared to her body. Thankfully, full sharing between hers and Kahli's system allowed Froufrou as well access to the clarification feature that Kahli used from time to time to learn more about her systemic abilities.

[Clarification: Your version of the Rock Summon skill powers up the rock by use of your mental energy, best represented by your INT attribute. This is mainly due to the fact that, unlike Kahli, you are not a rock elemental. You are instead a joint water and poison elemental, and as thus, cannot use elementality to resize your rock summon rock.]

Froufrou squelched with pride. So, in a way, it was her propensity for minmaxxing that allowed her to summon up such a large rock. This scenario had been, presently, quite a bit of an ego boost for her. Along with that, it was indeed quite eyestalk opening to realize her own elementality. Froufrou surely knew in her throbbing mucus membrane of throbbing mucus membranes that she did indeed have some sort of elementality present in her non-person, but having her system define it so clearly indeed made Froufrou feel not only validated, but enlightened as well. Froufrou wondered if any of her future [skills] would include uses of such elementality. Clearly enough, it already explained how [Putrefy] functioned as a sort of dual water and poison elemental [skill]. And who was Froufrou kidding - as long as Kahli didn't get her balanced hands on Froufrou's next [skill] slot, she'd probably level up her [Putrefy] [skill] yet again. Minmaxxing, after all. For a second, Froufrou wondered if the reason that Kahli always tried to keep her [skills] so balanced was due to some sort of insecurity regarding her big left foot. After all, if Kahli felt unbalanced physically, it only made sense for her to try and balance herself systemically. Which of course was absurd, considering the fact that to the best of Froufrou's knowledge the clear path to ultimate mastery of anyone's system was that of minmaxxing. Perhaps, Froufrou thought, it was for the best that she was unable to share these thoughts with Kahli directly. She had a feeling that her [paired] companion wouldn't take to such direct analysis and confrontation very well.

With that, Froufrou decided to shift her perspective instead back to her current issue - her current issue being of course that she was hurling down through the sky at an alarming rate. So it was that Froufrou prepared to kick off as best she could with her largest tendril, and indeed the rock quickly shot out and then back up to her in a way that quickly and assuredly stopped her descent.

Only, it did so far too quickly. See, Froufrou hadn't been privy to Kahli's internal thought process when she was learning to slowly kick off the summoned rock in order to levitate. Now, had Froufrou been paying attention, she could've easily surmised what Kahli was doing in order to copy that method. However, Froufrou had been habitually falling sleep pretty much every time Kahli started using her big rock to hover through the air. This was in part due to the turbulence having an almost calming, womblike effect, and in other part due to the fact that Kahli almost never tried to ask her for advice while she was focused on kicking off her rock. It was, in this and many other ways, the best of opportunities for Froufrou to get some covert shuteye.

Irregardless, Froufrou had kicked far too forcefully off her big rock. Had she been theorizing such a technique herself for the first time, she doubtlessly wouldn't have done so - indeed her [INT] was far too high to make such a foolish mistake - however the issue was in that she'd taken it for granted that the [skill] functioned as Kahli had utilized it without fully understanding its limitations and implications. And thus it was that the rock rushed right back to Froufrou in an instant and flattened her like a pancake.

[You died]

[End scenario]

Froufrou was in the void yet again, alone excepting for the younger Supreme Time Protector.

"Wow," they said with a shake of their hooded head. "You've been having a really tough go at this [checkpoint]. I wish I had something profound to say about everything you've gone through, but honestly, I'm still figuring out stuff about time myself. I am pretty young, after all. Comparatively speaking."

Froufrou squelched in mild irritation.

"Alright..." The younger Supreme Time Protector cleared their throat. "So, um, are you ready for your third scenario yet? Technically time doesn't pass here, but the longer we're here, well, then the longer we seem to be here to our subjective perceptions."

Froufrou gave a lightly affirmative squelch and looked down at her tendrils at the final timeline. What was she in store for, now?
