For decades now people have used video games as an escape from the real world; an opportunity to shuffle off this mortal coil and go be whomever they want.   In Jacob's case, desperate to retreat from a life that failed to live up to even his own low expectations, the option to permanently live in a world of magic, monsters, and mayhem is too great an offer to refuse.   Maybe he should have read the manual first.
