Synopsis

Dragons rule the world, having carved it into pieces long ago. The primordial Aspects abandoned the world of Astria at the end of the last era. In their absence, the dragons claimed territories across the continents, to rule as living gods. With centuries of experience to develop their own Aspects - their unique embodiments of a concept - the dragons possess an almost insurmountable advantage over mortals' Aspects and lesser facets - but this same advantage has made them complacent. The Dragon of Battle languishes on his peak, hardly finding any challenges worth his Aspect in recent decades. He mostly leaves his chosen warriors to govern in his stead, until a new cycle of his grand war games is set to begin. The Dragon of Wealth is content to use his Aspect merely to accumulate money, and lounges in his cave as he squeezes his city-states dry in his greed. Most Dragons sleep, or treat the world as a playground, emerging only for their amusement. The Dragon of the Tides is one of the few able to see the approaching storm, and seems to be the only one willing to take action. Meanwhile, the Dragon of Knowledge views all from his tower, wielding his Aspect to scry past, present, and future, as he keeps watch over Astria to ensure that dragons remain ascendant. Confident in his grand hoard of knowledge, he is unaware of what he has already missed. The recently born Aspect of Revolution has already begun taking steps to upend this stagnant world order. And three humans set out from their village in Battle's domain. Kael, the young Aspect of Rain, and his two friends have spent their lives sheltered from the worst of the fighting, but now emerge to explore a rapidly changing world. [Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] The story uses third person limited POV, with sometimes-imperfect information given to the reader. We'll mostly be following Kael as he journeys throughout the world, with the occasional interlude or alt-focus.
