An event called the Aether Spark awakens the power of many upon the planet. The government is overthrown, society's law and order is thrown to the law of the strong. We follow the perspective of many characters from many walks of life and see how they intersect. Freedom fighters, zealots, soldiers, anarchists and a few who sit outside it all find themselves trading words, knowledge and blows. What meaning can be found in this new world?
