In an effort to save the human race from extinction, the passengers have been genetically enhanced in such a way that they are capable of surviving on the inhospitable planet Earth for as long as it takes before mankind can be re-established. This was achieved through the process of gene splicing, which is used by many high society members to further their personal ambitions. To avoid any potential problems with this matter, the passengers were assigned to different classes based on wealth and social standing. The wealthiest individuals are given private suites located within the cabins while those of less means are forced to live in cramped accommodations more akin to what one may find on a cargo ship.
