Synopsis
The young believe those who rule should serve the people. And that is why war is an old man’s pastime.
A Young Man’s Guilt details Cyrus Du Pont’s rise to power as he seeks to champion humanity against creatures from beyond the pale. He will find friends and foes in his pursuit of power, pressing ever forward despite the growing guilt that plagues his choices.
Leadership requires tact, an inherent selflessness in being willing to sacrifice oneself for the greater good. But when you've been raised to protect your powerbase at all costs it is hard to trust anyone bar your closest enemies. Because at least with enemies one knows where they stand.
This is a progression fantasy centred on the rise and downfall of Cyrus Du Pont, the Mysteries’ Dawnbreaker, Last King of Dannbourne, and the Court-born Butcher who condemned the greatest tripartite alliance of man to a vicious demise.
_______________
Inspired by the first-person pov style of Suneater and Empire of the Vampire. While the main character will fall in the end this is not a tragic story. The indomitable human spirit is made clear in the cast of characters. Elements of realism are used because people are complex, and perfection is a tall order. I'd call this a Grimbright story for those that are interested in seeing good triumph in the end.
