Synopsis
A retelling of Mary Poppins in the style of "Wicked" and the recent Sherlock Holmes movie. The iconic nanny isn't exactly the "practically perfect in every way" woman she appears to be.
The story is told from Bert's perspective, from when he first met Mary Poppins as a child, and as he searches for her again as he grows up an orphan on the streets of London.
This ties in events from the movie and ties in events from the books with a dark twist. London has magic in the shadows, small magics, if you know the right words and there are dark forces at work steering the country towards a future without Mary Poppins.
This story follows Bert through a gritty London and the shadowy world of magic he cannot understand. He looks for answers, looks for power, looks to keep his friends safe, all the while he looks for the terrifying fae woman Mary Poppins.
This is a urban fantasy novel that will go into the shadowy depths of true name magic that is barely understood and has a high cost.
I wrote this while waiting for the Nov 2024 writathon. It will update once a month until the writeathon ends.
Planned to have three acts:
ACT 1 Young Bert vs the Matchbox man.
ACT 2 Bert enlisted in WWI.
ACT 3 Bert's view of the events of the movie.
