A Guide to Drekmur: A World of Impossibility
Night Singers (Vespertilio Dracones):

Night Singers (Vespertilio Dracones):

Description+Chacteristics:

Night singers have a thin coat of fur which tends to be black or brown in color and serves to camouflage them at night. This is necessary for them unlike most drekmurians because their small size makes them vulnerable to predators.

Night Singers tend to range in height from three to four feet with a similar relative wingspan as the average drekmurian. This small size makes them extremely good at making highly detailed items, making them invaluable to any trade which requires precise work.

Their second attribute is their nocturnal nature preferring to sleep during the day and be active at night. Due to the lack of light during their active hours these drekmurians have adapted a form of echolocation. This allows them to navigate in lightless conditions making getting around far easier. They also possess a reflective backing to their eyes much like Night Cutters allowing for much better night vision when there is little light.

The last notable feature they possess is the symbiotic bacteria which performs two jobs. The first is allowing for a form of bioluminescence similar to that of Sky Cutter but with a greater range of colors. The second is causing their bites to instantly cause infections in other creatures not of their species. This serves as a deterrent to any predators which might try and hunt them as well as allow them to hunt far larger prey. They do this by biting the prey and waiting for it to either get too weak to fight or just simply die. A frankly terrifying but not dissimilar hunting method to that of early humans.

Preferred Range:

Night Singers can be found in almost any environment fairly frequently other than the frozen plains and northern wastes. Though they do have a preference for forests and urban areas with their high availability of perching locations.

Culture:

Night Singers are highly communal living in family groups of up to one hundred individuals, within which every individual knows everyone else. They will often stay in these family groups for most of their life only leaving temporarily to work, hunt or similar. And will only leave permanently to find a partner in a different family group or if there are extreme circumstances. These groups tend to make decisions by debate with older individuals holding more sway.

They are also omnivorous, eating mainly fruit and insects though on occasion they will hunt larger prey as a group. While hunting this larger prey they will spread out before calling the rest of the family once prey is located. Which seems to be the origin of their species name as their hunting songs carry in the night.

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

Night singers tend to show up in practically every pre existing community with their individual culture adapting to better fit in. Their highly social nature allows them to quickly adapt and fit in as well, as them often fulfilling a niche which others struggle with. You would be hard pressed to find a town or village without some Night Singer population. As such the population of Night Singers is significantly higher than any other single species of drekmurian.

Anomalies:

When Night Singers adapt to living with a different species more than just their culture adapts, so do their future generations. Night Singer populations in areas with a majority of one species adapt somewhat to resemble that species taking on one or more of their notable traits. This has made it so that there are more anomalous Night Singers than not, though no one type of anomaly outnumbers the non anomalous base as a natural result of the frequency of mixed species communities.

When classifying these anomalies individuals you take the majority species name and replace the second part with Singer.

Sky Singers have larger wings and enhanced breathing.

Lava Singers have hardened scales.

Snow Singers have thicker fur and sharpened senses.

Sea Singers have gills allowing them to breathe underwater.

Desert Singers have infrared vision and immunity to most poisons.

Jungle Singers have prehensile tails.

Life Singers reduce the sensitivity of the emotion sensing abilities of any Life Nurturers around them as well as are able to sense the emotion of those around them to a lesser degree.

Plains Singers are about 25% larger than normal.

Notes:

I was shocked to learn that what I thought initially was eight different species was in fact just anomalous individuals from one species. It also makes me wonder if they will start adapting to humans and what they would look like.

The range of ear size and type still persists though it is interesting to see the lack of any horns. It makes me wonder why some species have them while others don’t, maybe it is a cultural thing? Like some species simply remove them, though that seems doubtful.

I have discovered probably the cutest thing ever to exist. While interviewing one family group I was invited to see a group of newborn Night Singers sleeping in a pile. It was so cute but I was disappointed to not be able to hold them as it would disrupt their sleep.
